On the 16th July 2008, Prof. Omu Anzala the Program Director, Kenya AIDS Vaccine Initiative became the Chairman of the Department of Medical Microbiology of the University of Nairobi. Prof Anzala took over from the outgoing Chairman Prof. Walter Jaoko who had held the position since 2003. While introducing the new chairman, Prof Jaoko acknowledged the support he had received during his tenure as the chairman and wanted the same to be extended to Prof. Anzala.

In his acceptance speech, Prof. Anzala thanked the Vice chancellor of the University of Nairobi for appointing him the chairman and promised to steer the Department into greater strengths in his new appointment. The Department of Medical microbiology and KAVI organized a lunch to bid farewell to the outgoing Chairman and welcome the new Chairman. In attendance were four former Chairman of the Department Prof. Bamba, Prof. Wamola, Prof. Ndinya-Achola and Prof Jaoko and other members of the Department of Medical microbiology and the KAVI.
